BAND

Band allows students an elective opportunity to learn a specific musical instrument. The opportunity is first presented to students in the second half of the fourth grade year. At this time, they are allowed to try out some instruments and make a decision which instrument (if any) they would like to pursue. After the semester of introduction to the chosen instrument (including the fingerings, embouchure, posture, notes, etc.), fifth grade students are offered the opportunity to join Band class. Participation in the class is open to 5th & 6th grade students with parental permission and teacher approval.

This class allows students to further develop musical abilities on their respective instruments in an individual and an ensemble setting. Class instruction focuses on the fundamentals of playing in an ensemble and laying a firm foundation for students to continue further musical development in Jr. High and High School bands. Students learn basic tuning and warm-up techniques; proper rhythm and counting; listening skills involved in good intonation, balance and blend; reading skills necessary to proper execution of different styles of music; and the basics of following a musical director.

The WCS Band performs at the Christmas Program, the Spring Program and 6th grade and Kindergarten graduation, and any other events as they have opportunity. Students are also encouraged to perform individually and to seek opportunities to use their instrument to minister to the body of Christ.
